Hello Everyone
I have another Spanish speaking Chatty Cathy doll (on loan) and she says the very same things as the original doll I built this page for. If you look and read below you will be able to see for yourself the records are the same. Everything down to the 161-202 number. This doll was made by Mattel as a Spanish speaking Chatty Cathy doll. Her phrases are below along with pictures of her record and body. Also a recording of her voice. If you listen closely you will hear both dolls say the same phrases.

Note HELP!!: I found a very nice person that sent me the translation on most of what I recorded on the first record. I still need your help, he/she could not understand a few of them, so I am again asking for someone to down load or just listen to these recording to tell me what she is saying. Please listen to both recordings. The record has 18 phrases on it so I am missing 9 of them. Below is what I have so far:

Both of these dolls were opened and repaired, but both records are the same so there isn't question in my mind the doll was made. The number on both records is 161-202, both records are dated 1963, both records say Cathy, both records have the Mattel copy right and both bodies are #4's. The only difference is one body was found with a Canadian head, (The Canadian head was the wrong head for this doll and this is why there was so much controversy out there in the first place. When someone did that, they made the doll look fake because we know that back in 1960 few Hispanic people would of lived in Canada, so why would a Spanish speaking doll come out of Canada? Answer, It wouldn't), But the other doll, is a brunette bob with brown eyes (also seen below in a sales ad) with the early brown limbs that you will see on the Prototype dolls and the #1 dolls. When I first seen the doll I wondered about the limbs but after comparing the limbs to the head, it dawned on me why the doll was built that way. Not only are the limbs brown but the Brown Eyed Brunette head is also kind of a pinkish brown. The limbs and head are close to a perfect match and Hispanic people are brown. Also if you take the time to read my Chatty Cathy Body page you will better understand why there is no doubt in my mind this is an Original Mattel made Spanish speaking doll. That page will better explain to you about how Mattel dated these records. It doesn't matter if both bodies were open before because the records are the same and Mattel was the only company back then that knew how to make a record with multiple phrases. Mattel created the Machine that could make the multiple phrase record and registered and patent it. Also for the records to be fake all the writing on the record would either had to be written over or added to and since there isn't any room on the record to ad more writing to it and I am completely confident this doll was made as a Chatty Cathy doll. Not to mention the fact Cathy is written on the record. Plus the only difference between these two records is the first dolls record has the #4 written on it and the second dolls record has the #76 on it, I think that is the number of the record on how many were made, but I do not know that as fact. Number 746-202 that is on a American Chatty Cathy doll see how the 202 is the same on all three records. That end number 202 or 201 is on all the Mattel Chatty Cathy records except for the MCMLX=1960 record.

(above) Picture is of an ad from a magazine called "Toy-Hobby Wholesaler" Also notice the ad says INDUSTRY NEW at the top of the ad, meaning it is a sales ad for stores. It was given to me by the owner of the first doll above. It's a bad copy but if you look at the bottom of the ad (left hand side on the second from the bottom sentence) you can make out the words "Spanish Speaking" and just below that it says "Colored Chatty Cathy". I have had this ad for some time now and have been searching the internet for it. I found the 2 ads below in a 1962, 1963 Ebony magazine through "Google" in case you would like to look it up yourself. I also have the original ad. These two ad's below are separate and were found on different pages of the magazine. I am telling you that because I could not find the last ad in the picture above meaning the Hispanic girl with the brunette bob Spanish speaking doll. But I know that ad has to be out there somewhere, likely in Mexico. But since I do not speak Spanish I cannot go to Mexico through Google to find the ad. The two ad's below I found because they are of the American black Chatty Cathy and Chatty Baby doll. Also you will notice in the ad it says 1962. That date is just for the date Mattel registered and copy righted the dolls not for the ad or the date of the magazine because like I said, I found these same ad's in 1963 Ebony magazine. Plus these ad's are viewable to all through Google. So if you need to see the date for yourself on the magazines please look it up, because I could not get a snip-it of the dates of the magazine I found them in. Take a look at the girls below, the girl on the left look Hispanic with her long hair and looks like the same girl in the ad above holding the brunette Spanish speaking bob. Also because her record is dated 1963 she would of been sold in 1963 or 64 even though the Mattel copy right date on the ad is 1962 and again that date is just for the doll itself, but if you read the ad it say the dolls say 11 phrases and I know that in 1962 the record changed and the dolls then said 18 phrases. So ether Mattel was still selling the dolls that said 11 phrases in 1962 and 63 or they used the same pictures and added different captions below the ad in the picture above. Because the picture could not of been printed before 1962 as per the 1962 date.

So that alone tells me Mattel did not always use the correct box for the doll that was in it. Notice how this box is numbered 683 Brunette and Stamped SPANISH. This is just more proof the Spanish Speaking Chatty Cathy doll was made.

PS: Plus it doesn't matter if the doll says 11 or 18 phrases just the fact that the Chatty Cathy box is stamped "Spanish" is more proof the doll was made.

Note: An interesting note is that the toys the doll comes with were made in Mexico, her costume made in Taiwan but her body was made in California which means her record has to of been made by Mattel in America. Which means Mattel had the ability to make a record in Spanish right here in America.
